How do refrigeration units work?

How are monoblock refrigeration units installed?

The clearest difference between the straddle and through-wall design of refrigerating monoblock units is how they are designed to be installed on or into the wall of refrigerated cells.

No matter how you choose to install your system, any gaps should be filled with a suitable sealant to prevent the entry of unrefrigerated air once finished.

Straddle monoblock units

The straddle unit monoblock fits over the side of the refrigeration cell wall, appearing on either side – hence the name – before building a roof over the top.

Through-wall monoblock units

Through-wall monoblock units are installed by cutting a hole into your cold room wall/cold room panel, before mounting the unit between the exterior and interior of your cold room.

Is a chiller monoblock suitable for all cold rooms?

Monoblock refrigeration systems come in a few different varieties, which dictate which type of cold rooms they can be used in.

Freezer monoblocks

Freezer monoblocks are designed for walk-in and cold room freezers that need to maintain negative frozen temperatures for the safe storage of food, drinks, and other perishable goods.

Suitable for temperatures between -15°C to -25°C.

Chiller monoblocks

Chiller monoblock systems are recommended for walk-in chillers and cold room fridges that need to maintain positive chilled temperatures.

Suitable for temperatures between +1°C and +8°C.

Do Monoblock refrigeration units require maintenance?

As with all refrigeration systems, regular maintenance is essential for ensuring your chiller or freezer functions correctly, for as long as possible.

As such, we recommend having it serviced twice a year. Each service should include checking the gas levels, cleaning the condenser, testing the controls, and making sure everything is working as it should.

How are Monoblocks mounted during installation?

Mounting a monoblock usually involves fitting the unit through a pre-cut opening in the wall or ceiling of the cold room. Wall mounting is most common, with the unit positioned at a high level to allow for good airflow.

If wall space is limited, for example, ceiling mounting is also an option. The right option will depend on your cold room layout and the building itself, so this will be identified in the design process and will be shared with you before installation.
