Are you experiencing condensation problems within your cold rooms, and don’t know how to get rid of it? Don’t worry, as this is a common issue that most cold rooms experience! The most important thing is that you understand how you can solve these problems within your cold rooms, and MTCSS are here to help!
Condensation occurs in cold rooms when there is a presence of warm (unrefrigerated) air coming into contact with the cooled surfaces within a cold room – for example, your cold room doors, cold room door frames and cold room flooring.
The presence of condensation in your cold room can be a persistent and problematic issue for your business if not rectified and solved sooner rather than later.
Before taking steps to rectify your condensation issues within your cold rooms, you must first identify the cause of your condensation. The two main causes of condensation include:
Learn more about what causes condensation in your cold rooms on the MTCSS website.
There are specific elements of your cold room that should be kept on top of, in order to prevent condensation from becoming a larger and uncontrollable issue where your business and products are directly affected.
These elements commonly are your cold room doors, cold room door seals and gaskets and your cold room panels. We’ll explore this further…
Cold Room Doors and Door Gaskets
Your cold room doors and gaskets need to be in good working order (providing a complete seal around the cold room door frame) in order to prevent any warm, external air from tracking into your cold room and altering the temperature, causing condensation to occur.
Replacing or repairing your cold room doors and cold room door elements could play a vital part in reducing your condensation problems.
Your cold room door gaskets are responsible for ensuring your internal cold room temperatures are maintained effectively. If they are broken, or the seal isn’t airtight then this allows the opportunity for warm air to seep in and therefore alter your cold room’s temperature.
Cold room doors not being left open for long periods of times is also an important factor that should be kept on top of – this is an easy escape of refrigerated air, providing the ideal environment for ambient air to enter your cold room, causing humidity and subsequently condensation.
We stock a range of cold room doors, cold room door gaskets and cold room door spares.
Cold Room Panels
It is important to include thermal breaks within the construction of your cold room panels to prevent metal on metal (an ideal environment for condensation) and warm air tracking in.
Ambient temperatures outside cold rooms can cause the room to sweat, meaning that the area in which you have your cold room needs to be well ventilated.
This why we suggest having an air gap around a cold room that is up against a wall to try and maximised the air flow around the room to prevent it from sweating and causing mould.
Using cold room spares to repair and replace problematic elements of your cold room can help you to reduce your persistent problems with condensation.
Requirements will vary slightly, depending on the cause of your problem, but the following steps can be taken to reduce the presence of condensation in your cold rooms:
1 – Adjust your cold room elements, as they may just be slightly out of place!
2 – Replace your cold room doors, cold room door gaskets and cold room door elements
3 – Invest in a secondary barrier (such as insulated curtains for your cold room doors) to prevent warm air ingress
4 – Improve your cold room ventilation, either by installing an extractor fan or adjusting the contents/layout of your cold room
