A professionally installed door is an important factor in maintaining low temperatures in any walk-in freezer or cold room, but it’s easy to overlook the importance of the door seal. For a cold store to be effective, warmer outside air must be kept out. The more the internal cold room temperature varies, the harder the cooling equipment will have to work, consuming energy and increasing your bills.
If the door seal on your cold room ceases to work effectively, several problems may occur:
Ice accumulation
A problem that affects walk-in freezers particularly; a faulty door seal can allow warm air to pass through the seal, producing condensation as it meets the cold air. This may lead to ice forming in the door seal, which may reduce the efficiency of the door or even damage the door structure itself.
Inconsistent cold room temperature
Cold rooms and freezers need a consistent temperature to protect the products stored inside. If a fault occurs with the door seal, warm air can enter, driving up the temperature. For sensitive products, such as fish, this could cause rapid spoilage and the growth of dangerous bacteria. Also, the compressor will work harder than necessary to keep the temperature low, consuming more energy in the process.
Mould growth
Debris, dirt, and moisture that gathers in the door seal will stimulate the unwanted growth of bacteria and mould over time. In some situations, where the cold room is used to store food products or pharmaceuticals, the presence of potentially harmful bacteria is not conducive to consumer health and welfare, so avoiding this situation is important.
Regularly checking the condition of your cold room’s door seal is essential to spot problems as they develop, particularly holes, cracks, or tears in the material. Any wear or damage that affects the airtight seal will cause problems later, so prompt remedial action is necessary.
Regular cleaning with soapy water will remove debris and eradicate mould, helping ensure the cold room remains hygienic. Seeking the advice of a professional is sometimes necessary to ensure that the door seal remains in optimum condition. At MTCSS, we provide expert cold room door servicing, or can supply and install a new seal if your existing one has seen better days.
