To keep your cold room fridge or freezer in the best possible condition, it is essential to keep on top of cold room maintenance and minor reparations.
Not only will this help extend the lifetime of your cold room freezer, but it will also make your refrigerated space as cost and energy-efficient as possible and make refurbishment costs much lower – as any issues are corrected before they escalate.
To do this, keeping a stock of cold room ancillaries at hand can help. So, what are the key cold room ancillaries you should keep in stock at all times and why?
We all know that keeping your cold room clean is essential, especially if you handle food and drink or work with the manufacture of perishable goods.
However, you may not know that regular cleaning can also minimise the chances of wear and tear for cold room components and decrease the likelihood of accidents and injuries for your staff.
As such, the whole cold room fridge or freezer should be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom regularly, as part of weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning schedules to ensure they remain clean and functional moving forward.
One of the easiest ways to ensure this is completed, is to keep a stock of cleaning materials to hand for use as and when needed.
Fixings and sealants are great for completing minor repairs quickly, keeping stock and staff safe, whilst also helping to stop small damages from becoming much larger issues. Keeping fixings and sealants in stock is also much more economical and better for your business’s bottom line too.
Examples of fixings and sealants it’s worth keeping in stock, include:
Self-drilling screws and bolts –
Most varieties of screws and bolts are used to fix much-needed parts to others, including white food-safe trims to cold room panels.
Sanitary silicone –
Food-safe silicones are needed to fill in seals around the cold room with a watertight, flexible seal. Most also have added anti-fungal properties to stop the growth of potentially harmful moulds too!
Without lighting, cold rooms can quickly become disorderly and even dangerous spaces, with the chances of accidents rising exponentially.
To stop this from happening, you should try to keep a small stock of replacement bulbs or lighting fixtures – as this will mean your cold room remains safe and orderly, and is never out of action for longer than it needs to be.
Keeping lighting stock in your cold rooms helps to prevent possible delays to business operations caused by lack of lighting.
Faulty shelving is potentially very dangerous, as it can cause damage to stock as well as the cold room (and even staff) if it collapses – leading to serious trips and slips.
Key cold room components that are faulty, and pose hazards to the staff, will also result in a failed cold room audit.
As such, replacing damaged cold room shelving with like-for-like or even interim shelving promptly is an essential step that should not be ignored if damage is noted!
Although it can be hard to keep on top of maintenance in very busy periods, cold room fridges and freezers can be subject to real damage during demanding and hectic intervals – all of which can have serious consequences in the short and long term.
To reduce this risk, regular cleaning and maintenance should remain a priority and still be completed, even if you are at your busiest.
