6 Most Common Cold Room Issues That Need Repairing

There is the potential for multiple issues to occur in your cold rooms, especially if your cold room is older! But with these issues comes repairs to help your cold room run efficiently and smoothly again.

So, which cold room issues are the most common?

  • Damage to cold room doors
  • Broken cold room door furniture and heater systems
  • Inefficiently running refrigeration systems
  • Damaged floor overlays
  • Broken insulated cold room panels

Don’t fret – each of these cold room issues can be repaired. But let’s understand why these cold room issues can occur first.

Why Cold Room Issues Occur

There are a multitude of reasons why issues in your cold rooms can occur – this is because there are a range of different ways to configurate your bespoke cold rooms.

Each cold room will differ slightly from the next, due to your individual requirements. However, on the whole the most common reasons why cold room issues occur is due to:

Cold Room Doors, Door Furniture and Frame Heater Systems

Cold room doors are the access point for your cold room, meaning they’re used multiple times a day.

Naturally, everything will experience wear and tear, but other factors such as impact damage can cause issues with your cold room doors faster, specifically to do with their insulation properties which are important for maintaining your specific temperature.

In turn with your cold room doors being used daily, this will have a knock-on effect on your cold room door furniture, such as your cold room door gaskets and handles. These should be repaired as soon as possible, as they pose both a hazard to your employees (if they get stuck in your cold room) and your cold room’s temperature.

Similarly, your cold room door frame heater systems should be repaired when required to prevent your cold room door gaskets from freezing to the door frame!

Refrigeration Systems

As your refrigeration systems are a key component of your cold room, because they keep it cold, they should be serviced and maintained regularly and replaced when needed.

Usually, your refrigeration systems incur issues when there are other issues in your cold room – for example, if your cold room door gasket is broken, letting ambient air into your cold room, it forces your refrigeration systems to work harder to create your desired temperature.

The added strain on your refrigeration systems can cause issues to arise, including it not maintaining the correct temperature for your products/processes.

Cold Room Panels

Your walls and ceilings are comprised from cold room panels, meaning that any issues caused by various factors (such as impact damage, ice build-up, general ageing etc) will have a knock-on effect on the insulation levels in your cold rooms.

Meaning that your cold room’s internal temperature will be affected, placing extra strain on your refrigeration systems to try and achieve your desired internal temperature.

Floor Overlays

Similarly, to your cold room panels, your floor overlay (commonly comprised from rigidized galvanized steel or aluminium) can cause health and safety hazards, such as slips and trips, to your employees if broken or damaged.

Such damage can be caused by forklift trucks, trolleys, pallet damage, or even ice-build up!
