Types of Cold Room Doors

Before understanding how to open each type of cold room door, lets recap the different types of cold room doors available…
MTCSS supply the following cold room doors:

1 – Hinged cold room doors – suitable for walk-in chillers and walk-in freezers with temperatures down to -45°C
2 – Sliding cold room doors – suitable for walk-in fridges and freezers with temperatures down to -45°C
3 – Personnel doors (semi-insulated) doors – suitable for any type of business area that maintains positive temperatures

Now we know the different types of cold room door, lets delve into understanding how to open each cold room door and their cold room door handles. Though there are hundreds of different cold room door handles available, MTCSS have selected the types of cold room door handles most commonly seen on doors…

How to Open Each Cold Room Door

Each of these cold room doors come with a standard handle. However, you can request a cold room door with a specific type of handle, or alternatively purchase a different handle!

As a standard, you open the MTCSS cold room door range as follows:

Hinged Cold Room Doors

Hinged cold room doors are one of the simplest cold room doors to open. This is because they are very simple to open – installed with a:

• Standard hinged handle – where you simply lever it downwards to open the door
• Pull-style handle – where your fingers go underneath the handle and you pull towards yourself to release the handle and open the door – allowing access to your cold room
• Recessed handle – where you put your hand into the recessed handle, wrap your fingers around it and pull to open your cold room door

Personnel Doors (Semi-insulated Doors)

Personnel doors are opened by using the handle in conjunction with a latch.

Similarly to a hinged cold room door, to open a personnel door you simply pull down on the handle, and open the door in the nominated direction (depending on whether your personnel door is for a left hand or right hand application).

Personnel doors also have the option to be lockable, depending on your requirements. If you have a lockable personnel door, then all you’d need to do before the above is simply ensure your personnel door is unlocked with a key.

Cold Room with Sliding Cold Room Door | MTCSS

Sliding Cold Room Doors

Sliding cold room doors are a bit more complex to open, due to the nature of the door itself and where the cold room door handle is placed.

With a cold room handle that is mounted on the edge of the cold room door/on the door blade, once stood in front of the door you should:

• Pull the handle towards the direction it should open (left or right hand opening)
• Step in that direction whilst holding the handle

By operating your sliding cold room door this way, it uses the cold room door’s weight against itself to slide into the correct open position for access.

However, it should be noted that you should NEVER:

• Try to yank the door open
• Push the door open

If you cannot open your sliding cold room door, please get an engineer out to identify the issue.

Cold Room Door Opening Systems

The above details how to open your cold room doors with their standard handles, however it should be noted that there are various opening systems available for each cold room door.

For example, there are automatic opening systems available to purchase for sliding cold room doors that remove the need to manually open your cold room doors – ideal in industries that require frequent access to their cold rooms for entering/removing products.

These automatic opening systems consist of:

• Pull cords
• Push buttons

Please enquire with our experts if you would like to understand our automatic opening systems further.
