This is why it’s important to ensure your cold rooms are running correctly and efficiently – to prevent any issues with your products, and to allow your cold room to stand the test of time!

What 7 Daily Cold Room Checks Should I Carry Out?

For best cold room practice, you should aim to perform these 7 cold room checks on a daily basis to ensure no issues are present or underlying:

  • Ensuring your cold room is clean
  • Ensure your cold room is at the correct temperature
  • Make sure your cold room door is operating and working smoothly
  • Check your cold room for any signs of damage
  • Check your cold room for ice build-up
  • Check for any signs of condensation
  • Ensure all cold room lighting solutions are working

The Importance of These Cold Room Checks

Ensuring your cold room is clean
Making sure that there are no spillages or leaks anywhere within your cold room is incredibly important, as these pose both health and safety risks to your employees and can potentially contaminate your products!

Ensure your cold room is set at the correct temperature for the products you’re storing
If your cold room isn’t maintaining the correct temperature required for your products and processes, this poses a threat to product quality and can lead to spoiled products!

Checking your refrigeration systems to ensure they are running efficiently and maintaining the correct temperature is extremely important, and you should look to rectify any temperature control issues immediately to prevent product (and cold room) damage.

If your cold room is running at a higher temperature than required, this uses more energy and therefore drives your cold room’s running costs higher.

Make sure your cold room door is operating and working smoothly

Cold room doors are one of the main components of your cold room, so ensuring they work properly and smoothly is key to preventing any health and safety risks (eg. employees getting trapped in a cold room) and any air ingress/egress (altering your cold room temperatures).

Check your cold room for any signs of damage
Checking your cold room for any signs of damage is imperative, as damage to cold room components can have a knock-on effect to other cold room properties! (Such as your desired cold room temperature). Accidental damage to cold room components, such as your cold room door or cold room panels can affect their insulative properties, and therefore result in an increase of cold room temperature and decrease in efficiency.

Check your cold room for ice build-up
Identifying the presence of ice build-up, and rectifying this as soon as possible, is important. The most common reason for the presence of ice build-up is due to changes in the internal temperature of your cold room.

However, ice build-up can quickly affect your products and cause further damage to cold room elements such as your cold room doors – so keeping on top of it, and rectifying as soon as possible, is best cold room practise to prevent worse situations.

Check for any signs of condensation within your cold room
Similar to ice build-up, checking for any condensation in your cold room can help you to prevent any further damage to your cold room elements and products stored.
Condensation in cold rooms typically occurs when there’s a presence of warm air that comes into contact with refrigerated surfaces in your cold room, so checking your cold room doors, cold room door seals, and cold room panels will be beneficial!

Ensure all lights and additional elements in your cold room are working efficiently
You want to prevent disaster for employees in your cold room, so ensuring your cold room lighting solutions and any additional cold room elements (such as your entrapment alarms) are in good working order is the easiest way to prevent disasters from occurring.

Such disasters may include, getting trapped in the cold room and not being able to see anything due to the lights not working, or products being contaminated if being handled/processed in the dark.
